Actually "mestizo" specifically refers to the mixed race of indigenous and European (typically Spanish/Portuguese) folk. There were many words assigned to different mixed races (i.e.: "pardos" for African/European and "zambo" for African/Indigenous), but the word used to describe mixed races in general was "casta."

These Europeans were very concerned with defining races. They even defined whites born in the Americas as "criolles" so they could differentiate between "true" Europeans.
